Challenges

February 24th, 2006

Here we go…

Hope you guys are enjoying yourselves. It’s time to recap on our discussion about some of the challenges that we face while we try and be responsible and effective in our work as volunteers and project planners.

After a brainstorm session, we whittled our long list of challenges to 5 big ones: Sustainability, finding good local channels to work with, attitudes, cultural barriers, and skills of volunteers.

Something else we discussed is the tension between our “profession” as students, with all of the time and energy constraints that entails, and the desire (and need) for us to be engaged in a consistent way with the people we are working with. A question that seemed to resonate with a lot of people was: how is our time best spent?

How might some of these challenges hold us back? How might they hold the communities we’re working with back?

These are all things to be thinking about. Did anything come up today that made you look at volunteerism differently? Any good tips? Stories?

Hello world!
